500 or so metres would make pretty reasonable power by my calculations and a minimal distance to pump it back up.
Evaporation would be taken care of by the natural inflows already there so you wouldn't need big rainfall to make it viable.
Maybe you could take advantage of the good insolation of the area to make some top up power if needed.

I couldn't believe that they couldn't see a 500m drop is massive for stored hydro and a hole in the ground works exactly the same as it would from an escarpment down to the plain below.

Well done for explaining it to them.
