ok - so, you don't use the pit full - you just use a couple of puddles at the bottom - and you have a reservoir at the top -

lets be clear on that --- it won't work if it's full - because if it were full - the pressure at the bottom stuffs up your head - right.
so - what you have is a very big hole - with tiny pools at the bottom and the top --
sorry - it ain't that big a system - yes, you would have a fall of whatever the drop is - but, you sure wouldn't have much volume of water to work with -
and, to get an idea of that -------- look at how much volume is in the first metre of a dam compared to the top metre
the bottom is minuscule - the top is massive
