The Intel gateways are required for a couple of main reasons - to connect legacy and new devices and to enable data processing at the edge (to take pressure of the cloud).
In a nutshell, ADRC can add value to the gateway by improving its capacity to make connections between devices. Particularly, where inter-operability between devices manufactured by different companies is required.
I'm sure there are more technically-oriented posters here who can explain it better. But suggest that you read the TMT Analytics report which provides a good backgrounder on IoT in general and ADRC in particular
