Hanrahan, try this: right click on recycle bin, then left click on "open" at the top of the menu that opens. All files in the bin are then displayed, and you can individually restore or delete.
It might be slow though with "thousands"of files.
How about using "System restore" and pick a date to restore to before you had deleted them?
