I tend to think Putin's goals are not an invasion, but to i) shake up the EU further ii) negotiate from what he sees as a position of strength. (Saying to the US "please can we negotiate?" would wreck his strongman image at home).
But then of course, he did previously annex the Crimean peninsula and parts of eastern Ukraine, so who knows with these red lunatics?
