Nato would have no reason to exist if Russia was a member. If Russia had joined the EU then Europe would be the most powerful superpower ever seen. You know the US could never allow that. Now as they attempt to destroy Russia, they have the added benefit of wrecking the German economy with premium priced gas purchased from the US and others, preventing another possible superpower. Imagine an expanded Europe with easy access to all the Soviet resources.
