But nowadays mines make provision for up to 1 in 200 years and even 1 in 400 year rain events.
This is standard procedure using fairly standard modelling that takes into account the size of the catchment, etc.
Afterall peoples lives are at stake and a lot of money for mining equipment lost, and income and shareholders money.
And flood events have been happening for the past 120 years of mining history. This is just standard risk mitigation for the industry.
There is no reason why a large rain event like this could be planned for.
The industry has gone past putting it down to bad luck.
