I am a retired academic (and, to use a NYC term) an unashamed elitist. There are too many "Universities" and far too many students. 95% of any ability (academic, sport, you name it) lies within 5% of the population. This means that standards have fallen dramatically over the last 30-40 years. There is no point having 40% of the population graduated I if they have
had a poor education and only the top 5% of the population are really capable. Meanwhile, you have trouble finding enough skilled workers, like tradesmen.
Broaden the educational base!
This will probably be a most unwelcome post - sorry to those offended by it.
