I think it is a good example of the fall back position.

he clearly has a concept/understanding of evolution and science.

but when it comes to understanding why/how it all comes together he doesn't know.
Therefore the fall back position for anything unknown is god(s)

I noticed in Herodotus, this fall-back position was often used for the unexplained (sometimes it was quite amusing)

The fall back position is still used today.
Im not saying the position is right or wrong, just that it is there and often used throughout history.
