My take on the idea is related to Carl Jung and the collective unconscious. Jung indicated the collective unconscious is the source of all creativity and imagination.
Maybe such an energy field that has been accumulating since life began on earth is unifies all living things at a fundamental level.
Call it nature or spirituality, I believe we do not need to look outside our world to find answers and suspect Pythagoras may have understood this idea, being an intuitive thinker.
