FWIW I do not equate literacy levels with how smart people are.
My comments related to English literacy levels & the differing capacities of people to differentiate material depending on the complexity of language used.
It is only in relatively recent times that the great majority of people have completed English to senior secondary school levels. So too with easy access to adult education - this is relatively new to our society. Of course Australia also has many people whose first language is not English.
IMO your point about taking up arms also makes light of some of the disturbing incidents we are witnessing in our society - perhaps the most public of which was the Cronulla Riots.
IMO maintenance of a cohesive society does not just happen by chance & we are deluding ourselves if we think we can make inflammatory statements without consequences.
