Hi Boomer,
I'm actually non-religious, close to being a confirmed atheist myself. However I accept that religion can build moral character in people, and provide sustenance for what I might term the aspiration of the human spirit. On top of that immense amounts of charity work and low cost education is provided by churches. Finally they are often reservoirs of great cultural history and resonance.
Religion nowadays is a slow moving target - it's easy to score off it as Dawkins has. It's shame he has done it with cheap shots in this instance, and with a lack of charity - a virtue that christian churches at their best, have been renowned for millenia.
