The last time the UK sold gold (the Brown stain) was at the very bottom of the cycle and this. Many countries know their prosperity is measured in their holdings of gold and selling this off would be political suicide.
I suspect with most countries who are in debt to the eye balls their gold holdings are barely a scratch against their total owed debt, in some extreme cases I suspect the INTEREST on their debt is higher than the value of their gold holdings. I'd like to see some graphs on this if anyone has access to any.
Gold is the only place to be in an environment where nothing but comparative wealth is pegged against it.
