Great question re Bahrain,Saudi and Zimbabwe.
Remember the 1st Gulf war when we attacked Iraq in order to restore the feudal monarchy of Kuwait?
Seems the first thing to do with someone whom the West wants to attack is demonise them so that we don't get too upset and can rationalise the attack as necessary.
