they weren’t free that’s for sure. However there was no way they weren’t losing a bundle, as they were severely restricted as to how many passengers they could bring in each day (because of quarantine capacity), the planes were flying in 3/4 empty, although cargo helped. Qantas only flew when they could do full repatriation flights. My daughter came back with Qatar and my son used Singapore Air in 2021 to get back to renew his USA work visa.. (Has to be done every 2 years.).
I am a long term Qantas FF (Lifetime gold) and it really isn’t a quality airline anymore. Joyce made huge profits but I wonder how the next few years will go. It’s been so starved of cash (buybacks instead of deploying capital), that’s its planes are falling to pieces….
