We are certainly much smarter today, and that's totally due to scientific advancements. Go ahead and argue otherwise from the electrified rock you are reading this from.
Google the Scientific method, it'll blow your mind. You speak with 100% certainty which is ironic because it's impossible to be 100% certain with any of this. People (incl. scientists) are flawed, so our decisions are sometimes flawed as well.
That said, we can try and make the best decisions with the information we have at hand. It's not very brave to hide behind hindsight...
