I notice that Macquarie bank have been drafted by Qantas to help them see off a potential takeover. It's got to be one of the great tragedies that Macquarie were deprived of their opportunity to pay $5.75 (from memory) per share for Qantas in late 2007. "The smartest guys on the street" were only saved from their own stupidity by a couple of fund managers who were looking after large stakes in Qantas and blocked the offer as not representing full value for the company. $5.75 looks rather fully priced now.
