QANTAS is competing in an international market against airlines that have access to much lower labour costs and, in many cases, financed, or at least assisted financially, by their governments. If QANTAS is to survive on its international routes it has no choice but to restructure its workforce. Many Aussie coys have being doing this for over a decade. Those which were unable to do so moved their business overseas or simply closed their business.
We only have to look back in time and look at the demise of Ansett, which refused to accept the reality of the modern business world and continued to molly coddle its workforce with over unsustainable over generous benefits.
