No one is saying it is a walk in the park. The recent snap lockdowns became a trend because SA was given false information and cut short their lockdown. Since then QLD, VIC and WA have used the same approach with great results. BUT these snap lockdowns have shown that the lockdowns and border closures are unnecessary. The highly infectious UK variant apparently caught by the WA hotel security guard/ride share driver was not so infectious after all despite all the places he visited including a gym in the afternoon which no doubt would have been quite busy. Instead of lockdowns, wearing masks for the next two weeks or until clear(cotton masks have proven to be effective at significantly reducing droplets spread), strict physical distancing while tracing happens is all that is required. So as long as international borders are closed, there is no reason domestically for lockdowns or border closures. Everyone said NSW would have a big outbreak. Well guess what, for a state smaller then most with the highest population, taking in the most international returns and opened to most states for the longest, they have proven time and time again the tracing strategy and blocking hot spots work.
