    Cherry picking like that isn't really a fair comparison @Hairyback. After the SARS outbreak in 2004 (I think?), they developed a coronavirus vaccine in about 2 years. It didn't make it to human approval because they got SARS under control before then. Something similar happened with MERS.

    But all the background knowledge to be ready to go if a new coronavirus popped up was developed back then. Which is part of why it has been so fast this time around. The other part is how much all this is costing the economy (SARS/MERS didn't have that kind of impact) - so there are a lot of people willing to invest big to make this happen.
