Just as a side note, the 787 is NOT a 777 replacement! It's smaller than the 777-300ER. The only thing challenging the 777 is the A350-1000 which will be taking on the 777-200ER.
The 777-300ER is still a viable option to replace the older 747-300/400's as the fuel burn is still 20% less than that of the 747-400. It may not have quite the passenger or load carrying capacity of the 747's but if QF are having issues with load factors on international sectors then that isn't an issue, plus you have some significant operating cost .
One only has to look at who's operating what in and out of Australia and you'll quickly see a large majority are no longer operating quad-jets,, with Cathay Pacific's CEO recently saying they've purposely forgone capacity for frequency to attract more customers with a schedule which would appeal to most people.
