Guarantees are expected in return for productivity offsets, not for nothing. They are also negotiated for the life of an EBA (usually 3 years), NOT FOREVER, so it is hardly a case of workers/unions expecting too much. You make them out to be expecting a charity, fact is mate, the company has got its $$$$$ worth over and over.
Do you really think executives do not negotiate security in the form of massive (obscene) bonuses? Is it ok for management to demand security in the form of huge salaries and bonuses (regardless of poor performance) and not ok for workers to seek some kind of security, despite the fact that they deliver time and time again? If you answered yes then you are a hypocrite IMO.
