Qantaslink's planned changes to aircraft and flight routes announced yesterday, are intended to bring down unit costs by 3 per cent and boost aircraft use by 5 per cent. 20 to 30 new jobs will be created. Qantaslink has 56 separate flights in the country.
They introduced a Q400 74 seat aircraft to Port Lincoln, - which required security screening to be installed. The local Council spent a lot of money on a new airport facility to accommodate the larger plane, but yesterday Qantas announced a reversion to 50 seat aircraft, - which does not require security screening. They failed to tell the Council about their decision, who found out about it in the press.
They did the same thing at Dubbo, but Dubbo is expected to retain or even increase the Q400 frequency.
Rex is talking about a return to dividends. It is an extremely well managed company in a very difficult industry. A real thorn in Qantas's side.
