Shane Qantas has every right to be worried. Qantas has to make a profit and answer to shareholders, and has questionable support from it's home government. Qatar and Emirates have none of these concerns.
Doha airport in Qatar has the longest sea-level runway in the world, over 5 kilometres. Why? Status. It's completely unneccessary to aircraft performance. They treat market share the same way... more equals status and prestige, and who cares how much oil money we spend to get it... not a level playing field at all.
