Was in Dunedin, NZ the past few days and today lunched with an old friend and professor of chemistry at Otago University whom I hadnt seen for about 15 years. He was one of my lecturers in the Chem dept. Asked him what he was up to and he started raving on about this wound healing gel that he had co-developed. Very specifically developed for nasal wounds. Had recently been approved by FDA and CE Mark (EU) approval. We had this riveting, to us, conversation about wound healing, trials, approvals process etc etc. Our companions turned off obviously.
The product they developed and got approval for is called Chitogel. They collaborated with a pharma corp and got bought over after the trials and got paid out. But had a buy back clause. As it turned the pharma discarded the product and my friend and his colleagues bought the product back and with the help of the Uni brought it to market. Its been used on over 7000 patients around the World since 2019. Stupid thing is, believe it or not, waiting for approval in Australian Market (we know all about that).
The active chemical is chitosan, and if you do your research its has very mixed even dubious claims associated with its do called medical benefits. Its no miracle molecule. Unlike the TT wound healing analogue. I was thinking if these guys were able to peddle chitosan as a wound healing drug, what does that indicate for the potential of EBC-1013. Had some other information about trials etc which I will post later
