Who Are The Top Investors In Queensland Bauxite Limited (ASX:QBL)?

    Sadie Atkinson November 10, 2017
In this article, I’m going to take a look at Queensland Bauxite Limited’s (ASX:QBL) latest ownership structure, a non-fundamental factor which is important, but remains a less discussed subject among investors. When it comes to ownership structure of a company, the impact has been observed in both the long-and short-term performance of shares. Different types of investors can have varying degrees of influence on a company’s management team. For example, an active institutional investor may be more likely to hold a company accountable for certain actions whereas a passive fund will move in and out of stocks without regards to corporate governance. The implications of these institutions’ actions can either benefit or hinder individual investors, so it is important to understand the ownership composition of your stock investment. Therefore, it is beneficial for us to examine QBL’s ownership structure in more detail.

    ASX:QBL Ownership Summary Nov 10th 17
    Institutional Ownership

Due to the big order sizes of institutional investors, a company’s shares can experience large, one-sided momentum, driven by high volume of shares removed from, or injected into, the market. With an institutional ownership of 1.73%, QBL doesn’t seem too exposed to higher volatility resulting from institutional trading. Stocks with low coverage such as QBL, attracts renowned investor Peter Lynch, who has benefited from the momentum of institutions buying into a stock as it gained popularity.
    Insider Ownership

I find insiders are another important group of stakeholders, who are directly involved in making key decisions related to the use of capital. In essence, insider ownership is more about the alignment of shareholders’ interests with the management. QBL insiders are also influential stakeholders with 6.40% ownership in the company. This level of stake with insiders indicate highly aligned interests of shareholders and company executives. It may be interesting to see what insiders have been doing with their shares lately. Insiders buying shares can be a positive indicator of future performance, but a selling decision can be simply driven by personal financial needs.
    General Public Ownership

A substantial ownership of 58.87% in QBL is held by the general public. With this size of ownership, retail investors can collectively play a role in major company policies that affect shareholders returns, including executive remuneration and the appointment of directors. They can also exercise the power to decline an acquisition or merger that may not improve profitability.
    Private Company Ownership

Potential investors in QBL should also look at another important group of investors: private companies, with a stake of 20.22%, who are primarily invested because of strategic and capital gain interests. This kind of ownership, if predominantly strategic, can give these companies a significant power to affect QBL’s business strategy. Thus, potential investors should look into these business relations and check how it can impact long-term shareholder returns.
    What this means for you:

Are you a shareholder? Institutional ownership in QBL is not at a level that would concern investors. We are less likely to see sustained downtrends or significant volatility resulting from large institutional trading.
