Analysis conducted by the ACCC has found that 48 per cent of the population live within 1.5 km of an ADSL2+ enabled exchange.
Therefore 52% live outside 1.5 km of an ADSL2+ enabled exchange.
Not sure how many would be outside the 1 km area, but it is possible it could be more than 70% of the population.
The UK in some areas are doing FTTN and have been criticized for falling behind the EU broadband targets.
Maximum speed or up to speed is always quoted, but the important thing will be what is the actual speed and how many user will be able to be supported and still maintain that speed.
Other countries that are using VSDL2 are offering speeds a lot slower that the reported maximum speed that VSDL2 is capable of achieving.
Some of the other things that are normally ignored apart from addressing if it is a reliable connection and what the minimum consistent speed will be, is upload speed and how many functions and users can use the same connection at the same time.
There may be an argument that VSDL2 could be a stop gap in some situations, but it would still only be a stop gap until the copper is updated or it would become a second rate service compared to FTTH.
The NBN will be our main communication network and is a direct replacement network for our fixed line telephone system, and as such it needs to be as complete and as reliable as possible.
Copper is on it's last legs, why not put in the infrastructure that will be an asset for Australia for the next 50 years. The cost is quite affordable for Australia and the benefits are enormous.
There would be less opposition if the money was being used for increased spending on roads over the next 8 years.
I see the NBN as the answer to fixing the equivalent of a road that has been broken for too long and is long over due to be fixed.
