"No more, or less useful, for modern combat than knives, swords, maces, and axes." Incorrect, bolt action rifles are still used in today's military with great effect. A large calibre bolt action rifle in good hands can take down a soldier from a distance with one shot. If I was choosing to defend my home against a gang of outlaws, I think I'd be far more comfortable with a bolt action rifle than knives, swords, maces, and axes.
