An opinion poll shows Queensland Premier Campbell Newman's popularity has slumped in the final quarter of 2012, but the Liberal National Party (LNP) maintains a healthy lead over Labor.

The Newspoll in today's Australian newspaper reveals Mr Newman's popularity dropped 9 per cent in the October to December quarter, falling to 38 per cent.

That is only two points above his predecessor Anna Bligh's rating at the March election when the LNP swept to power with almost 50 per cent of the primary vote.

The survey indicates that figure has also fallen, with the State Government on 42 per cent, while support for Labor remains relatively static at 31.

The results comes after the State Government slashed about 14,000 public sector positions and three backbenchers defected last month.

Support for independents has trebled from 5 per cent to 15 per cent since the election.

On a two-party preferred basis, the LNP leads Labor 56 to 44.
