This potentially has major long term ramifications for Australian politics beyond the nuclear issue. The ALP have been in power in Queensland at the state level for about 25 of the last 30 years. At the federal level Queensland has repeatedly voted conservative. The reason appears to be that they view Labor as the party centralising power and the coalition as the party that respects the rights of the states in the federation. Were an incoming LNP federal government to overrule state rights on the issue of nuclear energy, they risk losing their long term federal electoral advantage in Queensland.
