Apparently the family decided to take the flight because they thought applying for an exemption would take too long. However in a case of such an emergency the patient doesn't need to apply for an exemption although family members would. Which begs the question how would they be transported? By ambulance, perhaps. Do ambulance staff have exemptions from the restrictions?
