    Two snippets:
The 15 coal plants in NSW, Victoria and Queensland are on average 38 years old, fast approaching the 42-year marker at which Australian generators are shut down. Coal supplies about 60 per cent of Australia’s electricity and renewables 40 per cent.
Analysis by consultancy Baringa Partners, commissioned by the Climate Council, found that while younger coal plants typically have 19 per cent of their capacity inoperable over the course of a year, this figure rises to about 35 per cent after they pass 40 years old.
Experts warn that not enough is being done to maintain the east coast’s 15 coal plants to prevent them from breaking down more and more in their last few years of operation.
Grattan Institute energy policy lead Tony Wood said while it was not possible to predict which coal plants would fail next and when, governments and industry were not preparing adequately for the inevitable future failures.
Adding to the problem of replacing coal plants exiting the grid, analysis shows their electricity supply declines significantly in their last years of life.

"...Wood said while the 2030 renewable energy target was an admirable goal, it was not top priority to secure energy supply or affordable electricity.
“Bowen says that all the numbers are telling us we’re on track to meet 82 per cent, but that’s not the most important number. The question is: are we on track to get the renewables backed up with gas and as we close down coal?”
The Australian Energy Council, which represents large energy generation companies such as Origin Energy, AGL and Energy Australia, which operate coal plants and are also among the biggest investors in renewables, said more investment in backup from renewables was crucial.
“As the system transitions and more coal plants reach the end of their operational lives, maintenance will become more challenging,” the council’s chief executive Louise Kinnear said. “To ensure coal generation can exit the system at the right time, we need significant investment in firm, dispatchable generation such as gas and other long storage to complement renewables and ensure grid reliability.”

I actually drove past lapsed Liddell and blustering Bayswater on the weekend. It was a distopian landscape scale view approaching from Tamworth, topping a hill to see a whole sky cloudscape seemingly emanating from the cooling tower stacks of Bayswater. Such is the might of these megawatt generators. As I passed closer by, it looked like only two of the four turbines were pumping.

Good times to be a waste gas to electricity producer and gas supplier to Australian industry.
