Some folks need to distinguish between blockchain and bitcoin.
Bitcoin makes use of a blockchain with its specific associated algorithm which sets a hash value and in order to "mine" the coin for placing transactions on the chain, it is necessary to determine the hash. Turns out it requires a lot of computation and for which there are special purpose chips. The algorithm is limited to some 51 million bitcoin. The processing difficulty (power usage) goes up exponentially as you get closer to the limit.
There are other blockchain implementations.
Ethereum is one. Ripple is/was (? - I haven't been following) another.
The point of the other blockchains, often is, to authenticate transactions in a public and permanent ledger.
Some are easier to hack than others.Some rely on trusted parties, and may be private to a closed group..
Apart from that there are managed databases shared privately. A lot cheaper power-wise for such applications..
