Chainsaw and Wallbrook,
Missed the joke first up, but I have a bit of geology experience (all be it coal mostly). So I'll have a go eh.
Iron is found in 16 forms naturally. Itabrite and haematite both have 2 Iron atoms and 3 Oxygen atoms.
The difference being that the iron oxide in Itabrite is contained as bands of haematite, magnetite etc within quartz . Generally after metamorphosis, as in Schists.
Haematite is obviously the purer form of the Ore. So yeah Wallbrook it is possible that the quartz has been weathered out, or the itabrite could simply be the outer edge of the pure deposit.
Just to clear things up, rust is also 2 Iron atoms and 3 Oxygen atoms. The circle of life.
