Telfer mined underground and open pit at once. Can be done.
Issue is that normally the opening to the underground happens at the bottom of the pit which obviously only happens once the pit is exhausted. Otherwise you need to decline from somewhere else which makes the decline longer and more costly.
Remember most mines have mills that use all the open pit production without any spare capacity, this is another factor why underground often happens after the open pit is finished.
