I am only speculating, but you may recall in 2011 I think they did a geotechnical review that concluded (as it turns out correctly) that the upper portions of the pit were unstable and recommended an increased strip ratio. I don’t think the mine plan was able to adapt quickly enough and the slip at the beginning of 2013 was obviously a significant impediment. My understanding is that the basement rocks are highly competent, so the risk of further slippages will not increase as the pit gets deeper. Most pits have a period of extensive overburden removal, you may recall OZL had a similar problem at Century when they had the debt crisis a few years back.
