Yes I agree with you . It is a very smart strategy to not have a costly fly in fly out policy and to provide accommodation for the workforce in Cloncurry.
It is a policy not only backed by the Cloncurry Shire Council but by the business community which benefits from money being spent in the town and not elsewhere.
Other councils have been complaining about the fly in fly out policy and how it is detrimental to their towns.
With a greater stable population, jobs are created in a number of areas other than the mining of Rocklands.
This is an economical proposition for CuDeco as Rocklands is a mere 16 kilometres from Cloncurry and has at a minimum 10 year mine life.
Note that the offtake agreement with Oceanwide is for twenty years and CuDeco is looking at increasing the throughput from the current three million tonnes per year to between six and 15 million tonnes to further extend the life of the mine.
With the current downturn in the mining industry and workers being made redundant by Xstrata with closures and other companies in the Cloncurry region downsizing or mothballing, CuDeco has a pool of local experienced personnel to employ.
