IMVHO something underappreciated is that the USD is significantly overvalued with other exporting countries looking to prop up their economies by relative currency weakness.
As this relaxes and comes out of the equation gold will perform "unexpectedly".
There was a bit of this in the recent gush to $1,830 US/oz.
