'Herald Sun' is reporting online (in paper in print tomorrow) that an outfit called Intermodal Terminal Company (backed by the former First State Super that's now called Aware Super, an industry superannuation fund) is to construct a rail terminal at Somerton (past Craigieburn in Melbourne's north), ostensibly to carry containers from the Port of Melbourne as a port-rail shuttle.
IIRC this already connected rail site has a chequered history as the Austrak business park never took off.
The report omits which rail operator will operate the trains but says it'll be operational by 2025. This ITC entity claims Beveridge (the QUB proposal, further north) and Truganina (in Melbourne's west) could be built 'later' but says Somerton will be 'independent'.
Strangely the article doesn't mention the Pacific National proposal for Little River (which wouldn't allow Inland Rail double stacking of containers Melbourne to Brisbane) as these can't get through bridges and at least one footbridge (the latter just north of Sunshine, Vic) between Little River and Broadmeadows.
I'd prefer not to have some woke super fund involved. No doubt it'll be wanting government money so it's a worry that the socalist Victorian and Federal Governments have both praised it today.
I'm not saying it will but if the QUB proposal falls over at least in the future it can probably sell it to a company like SGP for residential housing lots.
