They shouldn't have slung mud at the Government. Getting immediately on the offensive just makes the company look like the billigerents and the residents of Kingaroy appearing to be genuine victims. The Government then looks like it simply defending the poor, unfortunate townsfolk and the company has dug itself a hole.
Aside from that all the evidence and circumstances are about ppb, drinking water standards, non-potable water standards, this well and that well. Trying outlinging a story on that to someone who owns no shares in the company and probably can't tell the difference between UCG and CSG. It wouldn't have much effect.
Instead the company followed all the steps to reach the point of litigation to enhance their case and illustrate the unreasonable actions of the Government, "On this date the company sought to do this and the response was outright contradicted with no specific reasonining, rationale or consultation etc.".
Anyway it's all non violent resistance but I think it probably was the most effective way to reach a positive outcome even though it is very slow.
