Newman is a smart operator, or gets good advice, because he has caught Ms Palaszczuk on the hop. You only have to listen to her pathetic motherhood statements so far to know Labor has been caught napping. Ms Palaszczuk will be the factor that ensures Newman is re-elected albeit with a reduced majority which is good for democracy in any case.
Labor has a leadership problem nationwide which is why, when the electorate is confronted with actually having to choose a Government, only the types who supported Rudd and Gillard will go with the disaster that is the Australian Labor Party (don't ask me to explain the Vic. abberation).
