Sometimes called the "Grand Canyon of the North," the Hull Rust Mine is the biggest open pit iron ore mine in operation in the world. At the present time, it is more than three miles long, two miles wide, and nearly 540 feet deep. It's operated by the Hibbing Taconite Company.

With an ore body 4km long, 80m thick and reaching a depth of 2km, LKAB's Kiruna in Sweden, is the world's largest, most modern underground iron ore mine. Since mining began here over 100 years ago, LKAB has produced over 950Mt of ore, yet only one third of the original ore body has been extracted.
