Like other forms of coal derived gas, and natural gas itself, syngas is less emissions intensive (around 30% if I recall) than above-ground black coal-fired electricity, but still has a significant footprint. It's similar to above-ground integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), but without the emissions associated with extraction and transport.

The CO2 has a commercial value in the states, which CNX proposes to exploit. CNX's acquisition of CleanCoal USA contained terms for the sale of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) to Anadarko, with the Montana reaouce located next to CO2 pipelines.
