As head of Patrick Corp, Chris Corrigan was the key player in busting union power in Australia's ports in the late 1990s. Australia is still reaping the economic rewards from what he achieved there - ie. many, many billions of dollars in efficiency gains. Everyone in Australia has benefited - except the union and its members.

Then in 2011 I was a new shareholder in Webster Ltd, a small walnut, carrot and onion grower, largely Tassie based. Chris Corrigan returned to the company around that time, injected a fair bit of his own cash, and the company never looked back, eventually being taken over last year.

He's also been chairman of Qube, a logistics company (like Patrick Corp was). It's done pretty well.

So I was quite interested when I saw he'd taken a large stake in Hawthorn and joined the board.
