There's an interesting phenomenon I've noticed in threads like this one. The idea of a "global warming religion" with unquestionable "high priests" is a very common one in denial circles, and plays a major role in this video. According to the denial camp, all "warmists" worship at the altar of Al Gore, and take his every word as gospel.

Yet, when you actually read through these threads, you'll never find a "warmist" citing Al Gore as an authority on anything, and naked appeals to authority in general are rare. What you'll find instead are quite detailed discussions of the data, and mechanisms, and nuanced treatment of error and confidence.

More often than not, what you see coming back from denialists is passages copy-pasted uncritically from their chosen authority figures (WattsUpWithThat, Monckton, NotALotOfPeopleKnowThat, ...) and blatant appeals to authority like those above which amount to "who the hell do you think you are to question a Nobel Prize winner?"

In other words, by and large it's the denialists that indulge in the religious cult-like behaviour they project onto the "warmists".
