Ryan is probably being blunt but to paraphrase, I think he means that if you are not sufficiently educated about how markets work, you are already at a strong disadvantage and likely to lose money. No disrespect intended.
There are basically three schools of thought on trading/investing, technical analysis, fundamental analysis and a mixture of both. Another school of thought is time-based pattern replication (like fibs, gann, etc). Don't know the technical word for that though some would group that with technical analysis.
There is plenty of freely available information on how to reach charts on the web e.g.:

You can also read a book called Chart Trading from Darryl Guppy. Recommended to me by Selmax and IMO a national treasure.
