The appears to be a misunderstanding about algorithmic trading or 'bots' are people are calling them. I've worked on these with a Tier 1 broker and their purpose is to execute a trade over the day usually at VWAP i.e. the Volume Weighted Average Price for the day. So when you see small parcels being bought every few mins this is a buy order placed by an insto seeking to execute their order over the day (or part-day) without forcing the price up by trying to execute their full order volume all at once.
I doubt very much this trading is being used to somehow support a particular price level. Brokers trading is judged against VWAP not the last price so if a stock trades all day at 33c then a small parcel pushes this to 35c at the close this has little impact on the VWAP price for the day.
