Jonman - "The Australian', were full of success stories about CSG in the USofA, " - depends how you define success.

The commercial US CSG industry is taking in lots of investment and generating lots of revenue (although maybe not enough to pay for all of the investment).

The US CSG industry uses a lot of 'magic' recipes for their fracking fluid and mentions of benzene, toluene and other long-lived nasties crop up without being reasonably refuted.

The US CSG industry will run down their resource in several decades. Any groundwater contamination, aquifer cracking, surface gas leaks will not be the problem of the company that drilled or operated the holes because they will have closed down years before.

Lets see Arrow Energy put up a bond large enough to pipe water to every irrigator, grazier, townsite, floodplain tree and ecosystem that stands to lose their near surface fresh water aquifers if something goes wrong. Putting up the bond won't cost Arrow anything in the long run as they can invest it in a restricted access trust and get it all back, plus interest, when they return all aquifers and other land values in good condition at the end of their operations.

Of course, if their were no genuine grounds for concern superannuation funds would be queuing up to put money into such a bond. But they aren't because the technology is not that good.

The good ol' USA. Privatize the profits. Socialize the costs.
