Here's a little thought. The brokers usually use CBOE (ex Chi-X) (cheaper trades, cross trades etc) and with CBOE they don't run a closing auction. I don't have access to broker level data so can't see what's what.
BUT ... if the sell order disappears at 4 and isn't present for the closing auction it's likely to be a "capper" - the very same entity collecting shares off screen currently between the buy and sell depths?
