I am not sure if CSL was ever a spec stock given it was owned by the government for most of its life.
It is much easier for the market to accurately value a company once it has revenue and there are few non-spec stocks that are far from their true underlying value. I don’t invest in the ASX200 (outside of my super) as I don’t think I have any better idea than the professionals as to which stocks will go up or down.
Even at the spec end my good investments have all been confined to biotech and a very limited number of resource sectors (mostly gold). Oil and gas has been my real nemeses with every investment I have made in that sector being bad - my only consolation is even the oil and gas people seem to have no idea what they are doing.
